Possible Engine troubles?

Hi All,

I'm new here and posting this for a friend with a 2010 VE Sportswagon. Hoping someone can help :)

Basically, the car wouldn't start. Assumed it was the battery - tried to jump start and this didn't work. Battery was replaced the next day.
Car then seemed to drive a bit rough after this.
A couple of days later it was driven approx 2km, until a loud bang was heard & then white smoke appeared from engine bay.
Car was then stored in garage. Seemed to start ok and was able to be driven on the back of a tow truck to NRMA.
Truck driver commented that car sounded odd.

NRMA then provided us with the following report:

After an ECU scan the vehicle returned a result with the following codes:
B1423 – SUPPLY VOLTAGE CIRCUIT
B0253 – VENT/FLOOR DOOR MOTOR CIRCUIT
V0159 – CAN-BUS NO COMMUNICATION WITH PARK ASSIS CONTROL MODULE
V0140 – CAN-BUS NO COMMUNICATION WITH BODY CONTROL MODULE

P0300 – ENGINE MISFIRE DETECTED
P0303 – CYLINDER 3 MISFIRE DETECTED
P0305 – CYLINDER 5 MISFIRE DETECTED
P0008 – ENGINE POSITION SYSTEM PERFORMANCE BANK 1

As a result of these codes we are recommending to have a second hand replacement engine fitted to the vehicle. The following is a breakdown of the items we recommend.
- Second hand engine
- New water pump
- New thermostat
- Coolant flush
- New oil and filter
- New rear main engine oil seal
- New spark plugs

NRMA is saying that the above is needed, but from speaking to to other people, we are not sure that a new engine is required.

Holden are saying that nothing can be done as the car was purchased second hand from a dealership & regular services was not done by the book.

Does anyone have any experience with this??
