Question about tightening wheel bolts

I heard that they have to be tightened to the specific torque or either two things can happen

1 too loose and they will come undone as you drive.

2 too tight and they will tighten up as you drive to the point the bolt studs break off.

i've always just tightened them till they feel nice and tight but now i don't know?
